This season’s hottest boots feature textured leathers and a mix of rustic, tough-chic detailing that swings between Western and military. The top styles creep away from last year’s focus on low-heeled comfort, with a shift towards contrasting rugged outlines with femme heels, wedges and platforms. While stiletto heels and pointed toes make an appearance, the two key themes this season are menswear-inspired and bohemian.

Get the Skinny: Patent to Suede Boots

Smooth leather gets lots of closet time this year while its edgier sisters hit the streets. Go urban jungle with knee-high and ankle boots in animal prints, reptile skin or high-gloss patents. The key to making this trend wearable (and office friendly) is to pair your daring boots with streamlined fall staples that tap this year’s minimal trend. Think pencil skirts, fitted blazers and tunic blouses in dusk-hued neutrals.

Still too wild for you? Then go softer with shearling and suede. Shearling mid-calf boots are so UGG, so stick to the extremes with over-the-knee or ankle boots for this material. For suede, anything goes this year. You’ll find the material on everything from knee-high stilettos to wedge-heeled desert boots. These leather styles are just begging to be paired with this year’s bohemian bonanza, and can work well when you layer a wide mix of fabrics and patterns. For a more everyday look, the rule applies: Pair your shearling or suede with classic fall staples.

Go West: Riding to Cowboy Boots

While the ever-classic equestrian style returns with traditional riding and harness boots, even wilder western styles prevail this season. Ladies, welcome to the Year of the Cowboy. Platform, ankle, wedge, slouchy or suede — you’ll find cowboy boots featuring those and more.

But buyers beware: Typical mid-calf styles cut women’s legs in half and make most look wider (and shorter). Keep your legs visually long and lean by wearing a knee-high style over skinny jeans or leggings, or by pairing ankle cowboy boots with above-the-knee and mini skirts. Unadorned Western boots channel slick and minimal, keeping the style just right for everyday casual without looking too cowboy. But the over-the-top Western styling is what’s most fun about these boots, so don’t be afraid to go bold and wear them with skirts and dresses.

Oh So Boho: Fringe to Platform Boots

Of all the trends this season, bohemian styling reigns supreme. The overriding approach is to pile on the layers, textures and patterns to create an exaggerated look, and boot styles seem to follow quite happily. Faux-fur tops, patchwork leather, funkalicious patterns, vibrantly colored suede, woven leather and fringe galore are just a few gems you’ll find. Many designers make hearty use of multiple ’70s-esque details, though you will also find calmer styles that can punch up your workday wardrobe without screaming “disco.”

Platforms and wedges make the jump from espadrilles to ankle boots, carrying this trend into a yearlong rotation. The trendiest versions feature sky-high hidden (or “covered”) platforms, textured leathers and exaggerated lacing. Think boots that lend a sense of laid-back cool, especially when paired with skinny jeans, maxi dresses, and midi skirts.

Boys’ Club: Combat to Oxford Boots

Last year’s combat, desert and military boot trend returns, but highly feminized with heels and wedges. The contrast is striking and much friendlier to wear, adding just the right touch of tough to dresses, skirts and jeans without falling into angry punk territory. Doc Martens are everywhere, and their classic short and tall boot styles work best with flowing, femme dresses or skinny jeans and girly tunic tops. They also have an extremely popular “Diva” line that glams up their traditional desert and combat styles with sturdy heels and wedges.

A variation of this trend is outdoorsy boots that also get a lift in style with wedges, platforms and heels. Wellies return, but this time sporting lace-up detailing along the top or all the way up the backs. Duck boots and hunting style boots featuring high heelsinspire stomping through the woods, as do wedge ankle boots with ribbed knit cuffs. A quieter version of the menswear trend is the return of Oxford toe details on both tall and ankle boots. While these don’t grab nearly as much attention as their sisters (or is that “brothers”?), they’re rather dapper at the office.

What’s on the hot list for Halloween this year? Angry Birds crops up in full force, as do super heroines and heroes, nods to retro cartoons, and a blood curdling number of vampires inspired by Twilight, True Blood, and even Fright Night. Snooki and the rest of the Jersey Shore gang are kicked to the curb and will most likely be in the sale bins come October—which is good news for those of you needing bump wigs for your Amy Winehouse costumes.

Movies & TV

Despite lackluster reviews “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” received, the characters still smash the competition as trendiest costumes in the Movies & TV category. Take your pick from leading lady Angelica (played by Penélope Cruz) or the ladies’ version of Captain Jack Sparrow. Another hot pick from Disney is the skin-tight costume for Quorra of “Tron: Legacy.”

“Harry Potter” returns for one last round as a hot trend thanks to this year’s release of the final movie, and characters from “Glee” are still singing strong. While Kermit, Miss Piggy and friends are old mainstays for costume sellers, the “Muppets” movie set to hit theaters November has jumped interest. Also expect to see the mentally disturbed vixens from “Sucker Punch” make a splash at parties hosted by 20- and 30-somethings.

Super Powers

The super hero trend has been going strong and will continue to do so as long as there are super hero movies to be made. Up for top costume nominations this year, you’ll find feminine versions of this year’s men in tights: Captain America, Thor and the Green Lantern.

But why should the boys have all the fun? Cat Woman, and Wonder Woman dash onto the scene with highly-desired costumes inspired by the upcoming movies. Not to be slighted, Batgirl and Supergirl have also captured a surprising amount of interest. Last, but certainly not least, the heroine of the retro cartoon “She-Ra” enters the competition this year and would make a good couple’s costume with He-Man—that is, as long as you don’t mind your sweetie dressing as the Princess of Power’s brother. From other retro cartoons, expect to see a return from last year’s sold-out sexy takes on “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Transformers.”

Not Just for Kids

Seeing as this holiday is technically for the kids, it’s only fitting to honor your inner child with characters from children’s shows both past and present. In case you missed her last year, Rainbow Brite is back with an even skimpier costume this time around. Adult versions of Smurfette surfaced last year, but interest is higher than ever with the new “Smurfs” movie. So far we haven’t seen extremely skimpy versions of the female Smurf, but we expect to see them crop up next year if not this year.

Sanrio’s Kitty White from “Hello Kitty” makes the scene in a short and sassy but adorable dress, while various characters from “Candyland” jump off the board and into the costume racks. Others to not miss are whacky, full-bodied costumes from the surreal “Yo Gabba Gabba” and an adorable, big headed sock monkey.

Let the Music Play

With ’90s Grunge seeing an uptick in interest, expect to find appropriately inspired costumes kicking around. Or you can dust off your Docs and make your own DIY costume—plaid has been a hot trend the past few years, so you’ll likely find some deeply discounted duds.

With Amy Winehouse’s death in July, and Michael Jackson’s murder trial expected to begin in September, you can be sure to find many tribute costumes for both singers. We’ve even seen a sexy “Billie Jean” costume for women that we expect to sell out quickly this year. Lady Gaga ruled Halloween 2010 and although she’s had few iconic looks this year, expect to see renditions of her creepy “Born This Way” face. Now that the Gaga reign is slipping, Katy Perry has taken hold with a host of peppy and sexy costumes and even Rhianna gets a nod with a costume version of her pale pink bodysuit.

The hottest trends for this season balance between sweet and sultry—mixing lacey blouses with slick leather pencil skirts, or pairing relaxed blouson tops with polished tuxedo pants. The ladylike cuts inspired by Mad Men have returned, but the ‘70s have taken center stage with both bohemian and sophisticate looks.

Super-Charged ’70s

This year, designers can’t get enough of the sexy ’70s. In fact, the decade is so hot that we’re seeing two different “micro” trends rolled up into one. The playful, wild bohemian look contrasts beautifully with the polished, buttoned-up style of the sophisticate.

Let’s start with the “sophisticate” trend, which is really just a natural continuation of the recent focus on the prim and proper cuts of the ’50s and early ’60s. Look for drapey dresses that swish with your every movement, high-waist pants balanced by flowing legs and elegant blouses, and shoulder-baring halter tops and dresses that flatter many body shapes. Other key pieces are sheer maxi dresses and skirts, as well as tuxedo-inspired anything.

On the opposite side of the ’70s fashion spectrum is the bohemian trend, which relies on a playful mix of prints and textures taken to exaggerated proportions. Expect to see fur and faux fur trim on everything from handbags to sweaters. You’ll also see oversized faux-fur vests, allover fringe and a liberal use of patchwork in leather and mixed patterns. This is a harder trend to pull off than the polished sophisticate look, so rather than going head-to-toe boho, focus on one key item and use it as a statement piece for your everyday wardrobe.

Plethora of Pattern

We’re seeing a mishmash of florals, animal prints, tartans, Asian (especially bright Indian) prints and even tribal patterns. You will also see plaids and camos crop up, though these have had plenty of airtime during past seasons and aren’t nearly as exciting. The current patterns trend taps into the boho style by mixing two or three (or more) patterns together in one outfit. The trick to pulling off this look is to select patterns with a common main color to create unison, or to stick to one color family and play on the past mismatched monochromatic look.

Veering away from the bohemian look, you’ll also find polka dots, athletic stripes, and bold geometric graphics. These pieces can work well combined together (using the same color rule above), but you can also use one piece to infuse your current wardrobe staples with of-the-moment flair. For example, adding a small shot of leopard print will jazz up an otherwise neutral or minimalistic outfit.

Ladylike in Lace

Lace returns this season, serving as the perfect foil to the abundance of leather pants, skirts and shirts by toning down the severity. Allover lace camis and shirts also work as a vintage-style textural contrast to the chunky knits, fur and faux-fur vests and sweaters that are oh-so hot. Another returning trend is the peplum silhouette, which fans out from your waist, creating an hourglass shape. This shape is divine for dresses and blouses, but can also be found in skirts.

Fit-and-flare dresses are still going strong, but the hottest styles for this season move into menswear or metallic fabrics. Sweet pintuck detailing is abundant on blouses, dresses and even skirts, and swingy accordion pleats make the scene on dresses, skirts and loose tunic tops.

Move over pencils and paper, laptops have long ago earned prime spot as the school essential for college, high, and even elementary students. With back-to-school shopping in full throttle, it’s time to hunt for the right portable device that can run the range of study buddy to entertainment system without batting a chip.

Best Bang for Your Buck: Budget Laptops

In the past, budget laptops had relatively weak internals that matched their price tags. But as the demand for affordable laptops increases, manufacturers release more and more powerful devices for unexpectedly low prices. A consistent top pick from sites like CNET and Consumer Search is Toshiba’s Portégé R835-P56X. This 13-inch weighs in at an ultralight 3.2 pounds and boasts solid processing power, a USB 3.0 port, and a built-in DVD drive (a rare find in a computer of this size).

Other budget lightweights hot off the assembly line include the Aspire One 722-BZ608 and Aspire TimelineX AS3830TG-6431 from Acer, HP’s ProBook 5330m, and Asus’ Eee PC 1215B. The Aspire TimelineX AS3830TG-6431, ProBook 5330m and Eee PC 1215B are powerful little packages for their affordable price tags, while the Aspire One 722-BZ608 is best suited as a budget secondary computer. For sturdy, mid-sized laptops (we’re talking about 15-inch screens here), the HP Pavilion dv6t-6000 and Sony Vaio EB Series VPC-EB44FX/WI are your best budget picks. Neither is very exciting, but they offer the best stability in the under-$900 price range for students who want a larger screen and aren’t as concerned about the svelte three-to-four pound weight of ultra-portable laptops.

Ultra-Portables: Lightweights and Tablets

The student who expects to haul their computer frequently will want to curtail back strain by considering a device that weighs less than four pounds. And you can’t get more portable and lightweight than a tablet, though most are best used as supplementary devices to a main computer and are better suited for consuming media (games, movies, music, websites) than they are for writing research papers.

Apple’s iPad 2 continues to reign supreme with the longest battery life of the 10-inch models, the sleekest body and interface, and the most responsive touch display (as tested by Consumer Reports and CNET). The next runner-up is Samsung’s Android-running Galaxy Tab, which is slightly lighter in weight, features a top-notch display, and also has an excellent response to touch, though its battery life is shorter than the iPad. Both of these tablets lack built-in card readers, making them better suited for portable entertainment and perhaps research than for writing papers. Like the Galaxy Tab, the Motorola’s Xoom and Asus’ Eee Transformer also make good use of the Android operating system. The Xoom earns a nod for touting its own built-in card reader for more storage and the ability to save or import papers and other files, while the Transformer incorporates not only an HDMI port and memory card slot, but also an optional keyboard for easier typing.

If your student needs a primary or secondary device for the bulk of their schoolwork — be it writing papers, testing code, or designing — then they’re going to need a more traditional device than the aforementioned tablets. Apple’s MacBook Air, Sony’s Vaio Z, Lenovo’s ThinkPad Edge E220s, and HP’s Pavilion dm1z fit most students’ needs in this area, while still being portable and lightweight. The Vaio Z is the priciest of these three picks, but lives up to its luxury reputation with a light and slim design, plenty of processing power and a docking station. The latest MacBook Air (as of Summer 2011) is probably the fastest ultra-portable device you’ll find, incorporating the new high-speed Thunderbolt I/O port. Some students, however, may find the limited flash storage to be a major minus if this is their primary device. The ThinkPad Edge E220s is perfect for the student who needs a more traditional lightweight computer at a moderate price point but isn’t deterred by mediocre battery life, while the Pavilion dm1z is an inexpensive laptop that gets the job done for most students with the exception of serious gamers or graphic designers.

Best Heavy Lifters: Laptops for Graphics and Gaming

For a laptop meant to be used for heavy-duty gaming or graphics and design work, you’ll want to stick with top-notch and trusted Brands like Apple, Alienware (owned by Dell) and ASUS — they tend to reliably incorporate new technologies and include solid support and warranty packages.
Most design students will probably look to Apple’s MacBook Pro (most likely the 17-inch and highest-end version), though ASUS’ G73SW-A1 and HP’s Envy 17-2070NR are comparable in monitor size and quality competitors. A micro-notch below these three beasts — in price tag and specs — is Sony’s VAIO VPC-F13YFX/B, but any of these will meet the heavy demands of a design student with ease.
Other graphics gods for design and non-design students alike include the chunky Alienware M11x, the aesthetically upscale 3D compatible XPS 17, and the slim and high-end XPS15z—all from Dell. And if you’re looking for an ultra-portable graphics or gaming laptop, then the previously mentioned Vaio Z from Sony hits the high-end price at nearly $3,000, while the Aspire TimelineX from Acer tops off at under $800.

Moving into your dorm room can be one of the most exciting—and overwhelming—parts of college. You already have studying down (we hope), but what exactly do you need to make your new room a home away from home? Read on for the basic essentials and everything beyond.

The Essentials: What You’ll Need In Almost Any Dorm

No dorm safes or USB-powered desk fans here. Below are the only essentials you’ll truly need (and some may even argue against half of these). Sure, most of this stuff isn’t nearly as fun as a mini fridge or floor pillows, but if you’re moving across the country it’s best to bring just the following and purchase the rest as you need it.

You’ll obviously want a complete set of bedding from day one, but make sure you know if your new mattress will be standard twin or an extra-long twin. You probably already have your own laptop or computer, and for that you will need the standard surge protector, an Ethernet cable (many dorms do not allow wireless routers—so make sure you have a long enough cable) and cord organizers or twist ties if you can’t stand haphazard cables. If you’ll share a shower with an entire floor, you’ll probably want a shower caddy to tote your basic toiletries, a bathrobe for jaunts between your room and the bathroom, and shower shoes or cheap flip flops to keep your feet bacteria-free. Other essentials are extra towels (trust me, you will find uses for extra towels) and a laundry basket or hamper. Some dorms equip each room with desk chairs, but chances are your own task chair will be way more comfortable. Alarm clocks and a portable thumb/flash drive fall between the essentials and nice-to-have realm, while space-saving makeup or jewelry cases may or may not be a necessity.

Stash Your Stuff: Storage Solutions from Basic to Creative

In a small space, storage can mean the difference between a peaceful sanctuary and a war zone. However, I recommend you focus on the basics and wait to assess your space for any larger storage needs. Small- to mid-sized containers and boxes corral hobbies and personal accessories, stacking “milk” crates effortlessly transform from shelving to move-out boxes, and a standard desk organizer will keep pens and notes in reach. You’ll also be surprised how much you rely on non-damaging adhesive wall hooks (like the Command line by 3M) to hold keys, handbags, scarves, jackets or even bathrobes. A bedside caddy will keep a drink, headphones and book nearby, while hanging shelves minimize clutter and maximize space in your closet.

If you have a standard bed frame and your dormitory does not provide risers or lofting materials, pick up your own bed risers. While raising your bed may require perfecting your vaulting technique, the five extra inches of height will allow for more under-the-bed storage. If you can’t even push a thumbtack into the wall (hello, stunning concrete walls!), over-the-door and hanging storage solutions hold everything from towels to jewelry. And just because that clear pocket shoe organizer was originally designed for shoes there’s no reason you can’t repurpose it for your basic tees (just roll ‘em up and drop each one in a pocket). If you have the room for a shelf, consider a folding one (saves a ton of headache while moving out and storing during summer) or a sturdy metal rack.

The Non-Essentials: High-Impact Improvements

While your dorm-issued mattress may be adequate, chances are it could use a comfort boost from a mattress topper made from memory foam or quilted down. Many newer dormitories now have dry-erase boards already attached to the doors, but if you’re missing this college life basic, look for a decal or simple board with non-damaging adhesive strips (like the Command line from 3M). Sure, most anyone you want to be in touch with probably has your cell number, but getting hand-written notes from fellow dormies is still fun. Cut down on the cord pileup with a Bluetooth printer and speakers, improve extra-dark desk areas with a small task lamp, increase air circulation with a small fan and rock out to music while your roommate sleeps with noise-cancelling headphones.

It’s easy to forget to lock the door, especially when visiting neighbors down the hall, so keep valuables and personal documents secured in a special dorm-sized safe. Before you stock up on all the cooking appliances you want, make sure you check the on-campus housing regulations. Most are posted online these days, so it should be easy to see if George Foreman grills or toaster ovens are allowed. You may not need your own personal coffee maker to wake up each morning, but you’ll probably want to share a small microwave and miniature refrigerator with your roommate. A basic set of dishware and flatware will be handy for midnight mac and cheese cravings, and you can cook almost anything from instant ramen to canned soup in a small “hot pot.”

Luxurious Space Mods: Life of the Dorm

So now that you have your essentials, storage solutions, and even life-improving extras, what else is there? Upgrade any room with the addition of decorative wall decals or a trendy area rug. The addition of LED string lights will brighten dull walls, while a well-placed lamp can create a homey vibe. If you have extra space to dedicate to lounging, look for cushy papasan chairs, rocking gamer chairs, stashable butterfly chairs, or even a slim-line futon. Short on space? Throw pillows or bolsters convert your bed into a couch and larger floor pillows are easily stowed under the bed when your room is sans guests.

And let’s not forget one of the most important aspects of dorm life: Entertainment. A Blu-ray player and flat-screen TV is good for movies with a small group of friends, the game console of your choice recharges your brain between study sessions and space-saving speakers can create out-of-sight surround-sound.

ESPN Films ’30 for 30′ Gift Set

Water resistant, drop resistant, super-strong magnetic feet, wrappable legs, an emergency strobe function and a 100 lumen LED light with six brightness levels—is there anything the ‘GorillaTorch’ can’t do? Whether Dad is a handyman or outdoorsman, he’ll appreciate this rugged and multi-task light.

LEGO Architecture Kits

Perfect for architects, history buffs, puzzle lovers and dads who just like to keep busy. From a rendition of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater to the Empire State Building, LEGO has currently released ten detailed kits featuring iconic buildings and landmarks.

Hot Sauce Harry’s Gift Sets

For that special Grill Master in your life, Hot Sauce Harry has just the gift set to make him smile. Whether Dad’s a sports fan or Elvis fan, this company specializes in themed gift boxes featuring spunky, delectable grill sauces like “Flippin’ Bull” and “Peach’n Pepper.”

‘A Clean Start Kit’ by Anthony Logistics for Men

Does Dad like to start the day fresh and well groomed? This kit by Anthony Logistics contains a set of five no frills and highly effective facial care products formulated specifically for men.

Buckyballs

The magnetic puzzle that takes desk toys to a whole new level, Buckyballs will give Dad hours of fun creating complex sculptures or just squeezing in his hand as a stress ball. Because this toy is made of many small parts, it’s best for dads with older children.

Webber Three-Piece Grill Set

From one of the most trusted names in grilling, this three-piece professional-grade tool set will not only make Dad’s next grill party easier to manage, but he’ll look suave, too. Stainless steel, long handles and a minimalist design ensure these dishwasher-safe tools will be enjoyed for years to come.

Belkin 36-Piece Demagnetized Computer Tool Kit

Is Dad always tinkering away on his computer? This tool set from Belkin is fully demagnetized to prevent damage to his hard drive or magnetic media, while the custom case keeps everything organized and easy to store.

Würkin Stiffs Power Collar Stays

These innovative collar stays are perfect for the Power Dad (or dads who wear lots of dress shirts without ties). Crafted from corrosion-resistant and airport-friendly alloy, each stay is paired with magnetic “buttons” to instantly tame his collar.

Victorinox Swiss Army Money Clip Pocket Knife

For the dad that just doesn’t like wallets, the Swiss Army money clip keeps his money in order and a set of tools close at hand. Crafted in stainless steel (or sterling silver for a higher price), this multi-tool features the basics: blade, nail file and scissors. The Victorinox lifetime guarantee against defects in material and workmanship sweetens the deal.

Picnic at Ascot Golf Trunk Organizer

For the dad that’s always on the green, this trunk organizer is a great strategy for keeping his gear organized and ready to grab when the urge strikes. Padded slots hold shoes, balls, spikes and tees, while the ventilated canvas wipes clean. As an added bonus, the organizer can be folded flat for storage when not in use.

Belkin ‘Conserve’ Energy-Saving Charging Station

Welcome to the Digital Age, where dads are overrun by electronics and unsightly spider webs of charging cords. Enter Belkin’s sleek USB charging station, which will organize and charge Dad’s electronics and finally tame his e-mess.

RFID-Blocking Wallet

It’s becoming easier and easier to swipe complete credit card information by simply “bumping” into someone. And we’re not talking about the classic pick-pocketing scenario. So if Dad’s an avid traveler (or simply not keen on having the RFID chip in his credit card or ID scanned), then this is one wallet for Father’s Day that we recommend.

GSI Outdoors ‘Pinnacle Soloist’ Set

For the backcountry dad, this ultra-light set integrates cooking and eating gear into a compact and durable package. The nesting design of the 1.1-liter pot, bowl and spork fit together, while allowing space for a folding stove and fuel canister. It is made from BPA-free polycarbonate resins, so dads will appreciate how it’s lightweight, environmentally friendly and safe.

Laser Level

Gone are the days of hand marking with chalk to make sure that latest project is straight and plumb. With a laser level in hand, Dad will easily make accurate cuts on a wide variety of surfaces. Most have highly-visible lasers that work even in well-lit conditions, but DeWalt, Stanley and Straight-Line earn top spot for the most popular levels.

Father’s Day with a tech and gadget guide is like, well, the Super Bowl without commercials. So whether he’s a techno geek or an avid runner, we’ve rounded up the greatest dad-worthy gadgets priced from cheap (under $30) to steep.

Cheap: Digital Tire Gauge

For the dad that is on the road often (or just likes to be prepared), a digital tire gauge is a necessity. These devices are small enough to toss in the glove compartment and easy, so Dad will no longer have to fuss with that old-school analog tire gauge before the next family camping trip.

Steep: ScanGauge II Automotive Computer

The ScanGauge II is an easy-to-use automotive computer that combines a multifunction trip computer, diagnostic scan tool and up to 37 digital gauges in one small package. Dad can easily connect it to his vehicle’s On-Board Diagnostic and a detachable cable lets him transfer it between multiple vehicles.

Cheap: Star Wars Headphones

Is Dad a huge Star Wars fan? Let him show his fan pride than with these headphones emblazoned with the Rebel Alliance insignia. They have a standard audio jack, are lightweight, adjustable and fold up for easy storage.

Steep: Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Speakers

Whether he’s out grilling up a storm of burgers or just enjoying the sun with a frosty beverage in hand, Dad can take the party outside and still rock to his favorite songs with these wireless indoor/outdoor speakers.

Cheap: Ematic eJam II 4GB MP3 Player with Video Playback

So Dad has continued to resist iPod mania to this very day? Whatever his reason (be it price or something else), he can finally own his very own non-Apple device that plays up to 2,000 songs or 20 hours of video and is durable and easy to use.

Steep: iPad

And for the dad that loves Apple—or needs a device that (almost) does it all—then perhaps he’s ready for his very own iPad. Earning a prime spot in Oprah’s Ultimate Favorite Things last holiday season, this Swiss-army knife of mobile devices has steadily rose in popularity since its unveiling and shows no sign of stopping. While the price is steep, this device’s strength goes beyond a simple eBook reader and web browser and touts powerful graphics that beautifully run games, movies and a host of unique apps.

Cheap: Timex ’1440′ Digital Sport Watch

Is Dad in need of a new sport watch? Attractively priced, Timex’s ’1440′ is water-resistent and durable. With a calendar feature, 24-hour chronograph, standard alarm, dual time-zone tracker and 24-hour countdown timer, this will meet almost any needs for the casual to serious sportsman.

Steep: Garmin ‘Forerunner 610′

Garmin’s latest upgrade to their popular ‘Forerunner’ GPS and running watch, the 610 has received glowing reviews in the few months it’s been on the market. An easy-to-use touch bezel lets Dad change screens with a simple tap, and training features continuously monitors his time, distance, pace, calories and heart rate (when paired with heart rate monitor).

Cheap: JOBY ‘GorillaPod’

Your dad still doesn’t have his own ‘GorillaPod’? Unlike traditional tri-pods, this handy version by JOBY has flexible, gripping legs that can wrap around almost any surface. It will firmly secure Dad’s camera to just about anything, making it a must-have for his next trip.

Steep: Nikon ‘D5100′ Digital SLR

Sitting between the entry-level D3100 and the upper mid-level D7000, the D5100 combines user-friendly ergonomics with Nikon’s impressive 16MP CMOS sensor, an articulated LCD screen and a set of all-new ‘Effects’ modes. It’s like an entry-level DSLR on steroids, making it perfect for the dad who needs a serious new camera at a more “affordable” $800 price point.

Cheap: Berkley Portable Line Spooling Station

No more pencils or tying line to a tree to prep his fishing rods. This portable spooling station will make spooling fishing line onto Dad’s reel a snap so he can spend less time getting ready and more time out on the waters fishing. Easy to use, portable and complete with a built-in line stripper and cutter, Berkley’s spooler accommodates spinning, bait-casting and fly reels.

Steep: Humminbird Marine GPS Navigator

Compact in size yet big on power, Humminbird fish-finding GPS recievers will give Dad crystal-clear results in even the murkiest water. Combining sonar technology to view underwater depths with GPS and waypoints and fast speeds to track his location, Dad will never come home empty-handed again.

Show Dad how much you really care this Father’s Day. From bar-quality beer glasses to a digital video camera swim mask, we’ve rounded up our favorite dad-approved gifts priced $100 or less.

Ravi Ratan Team Cufflinks

Dad will make a spirited statement in the office with these hand-enameled cuff links honoring his favorite pro or university sports team. The fresh, modern styling and quality materials ensure that these cufflinks will last for years to come.

Sperry Top-Sider ‘Authentic Original’ Salt-Washed Boat Shoe

Dad will look stylish in this classic American boat shoe made from durable salt-washed leather and hand-sewn moccasin construction. The leather is stain and water resistant, making it an excellent choice for his next swashbuckling adventure.

Fully-Tempered Beer Glasses by Cardinal

For the dad who appreciates fine beer, a set of professional-grade beer glasses that are dishwasher safe and break resistant will make his brewskis that much more refreshing.

Leatherman ‘Wave’ Multi-Tool

Leatherman’s ‘Wave’ multi-tool is hands-down their most popular model, made famous by its easily accessible blades that can be deployed with just one hand. Perfect for any adventure or everyday task, this multi-tool might just be the only one Dad will ever need. Available in black oxide steel (shown) or classic stainless steel.

Weber ‘Go-Anywhere’ Propane Grill

Whether Dad’s an avid camper or tailgater, the ‘Go-Anywhere” grill will quickly become his go-to grill this summer. The compact unity has a generous grilling area that is large enough to fit up to four medium stakes, while its light weight body with locking lid and pivoting legs will make it a snap to carry in one hand. With a triple-nickel-coated steel grate and porcelain-enameled steel lid and cooking box, this grill is built to last.

Krups ‘BeerTender’

Has Dad often wished he had a kegerator, but just can’t afford the space? At just 18-inches tall, the BeerTender solves that issue and works with most five-liter mini kegs. It maintains the perfect temperature and keeps beer fresh for up to 30 days by using unique internal carbonator technology. Easy to set up and use, the electronic cooling system clearly displays beer temperature and keg volume so Dad can keep an eye on his brews.

L.A. Noire

Amid the post-war boom of Hollywood’s Golden Age, newly minted detective Cole Phelps is thrown headfirst into a city drowning in violence and corruption. For both Xbox and PS3, this game is a visual feast for dads who love film noir, Mad Men or ’40s architecture.

Shinwa Dozuki ‘Z’ Saw

For dads who are serious woodworkers or discriminating craftsmen, the thin blade of this Dozuki saw will allow them to cut tight fitting joints with high precision. The very fine teeth have a cross-cut pattern that gives an extremely smooth surface finish when cutting both soft and hard woods.

Bocce Set

A gift for Dad as much as for the whole family, bocce is a great summertime outdoor activity. Rooted from an ancient Italian game, this lawn sport involves surprisingly complex tactics and a good dose of exercise. Most bocce sets in this price range come with a convenient storage or carrying case and equipment made from quality materials.

Tifosi ‘Tyrant’ Photochromic Sunglasses

For the active dad, these extremely light sunglasses have polycarbonate lenses that are polarized and photochromic, allowing them to darken depending on the degree of sun. A ‘Glare Guard’ reduces any glare and ensures 100% UVA and UVB protection, while the temple and nose pieces are made from hydrophilic rubber to ensure a comfortable fit.

Fossil ‘Rallye’ Canvas Messenger Bag

For the dad whose style is a far cry from that of “executive level” (i.e. he’s business casual through and through), look no further than Fossil’s ‘Rally’ messenger bag. A striped canvas strap and buckle adds interest to this durable bag, while the leather-trimmed cotton canvas structure adds just the right amount of panache to take Dad from workday to weekday while carrying all his necessities.

NFL Player Jerseys

If Dad is going through football withdrawals, give him a boost with a quality jersey representing his favorite player. Look for jerseys that fall in the $70-$80 range for the serious sports fan, as these are often engineered and constructed to duplicate the individual teams and position players’ professional jerseys by using similar fabrics and construction.

Casio ‘Classic Solar G-Shock’ Watch

This bold digital watch is made from resin and stainless steel and uses solar power to operate. Shock-resistance with world time, multiple alarms, a stopwatch, auto calendar and more, we think under $100 is a pretty sweet deal for a durable sport watch that can also store information like phone numbers and addresses.

Digital Camera Swim Mask

Is Dad is always glued to his video camera during family vacations? Let him make the most memorable family videos yet with this swim mask with integrated waterproof digital video camera. With the ability to take photographs up to 5MP, this mask also operates to a depth of 15-feet underwater. So whether Dad is snorkeling or in the hotel pool, he’ll never miss that wet and wild Kodak moment again.

Wooden Golf Club and Bag Organizer

With this handy and stylish organizer, Dad can keep all of his golf gear contained and ready to grab at a moment’s notice. A main space holds hi bag, while four shelves and a catch-all tray corral his shoes and accessories.

No ties or wallets here. We’ve rounded up 15 unique, useful and all-around awesome gifts under $25 to give your dad this Father’s Day.

Leatherman ‘Micra’ Multi-Tool

A dad without his multi-tool is like a cowboy without his trusty steed. If your dad doesn’t have his own good ol’ reliable yet, then Leatherman’s ‘Micra’ is as “fine as cream gravy” at this affordable price point.

MLB Silicone iPhone Case

So Dad’s a huge baseball fan? If you can’t take him out to the ball game, then at the very least you can outfit his iPhone or iPod Touch with a durable silicone skin sporting his favorite big league logo.

Jack Black ‘Jet Set Traveler’ Kit

Not to be confused with that Jack Black, the “wonderboy” grooming label appeals to dads who appreciate simple yet superior products. This airline-approved kit contains a cleanser, moisturizer and supreme shaving lather to keep on-the-go dads well groomed.

FootJoy ‘StaSof’ Golf Glove

This gift is a hole in one for golf-loving dads. One of the most beloved gloves on the market, the ‘StaSof’ offers a powerful grip, exceptional moisture resistance and the ultimate comfort.

Riedel ‘H20′ Whiskey Glasses

Dad will be sipping his favorite libations in old-world class with this set of two Bavarian-made whiskey glasses. A sleek, cylindrical shape is crafted from finely cut, transparent and dishwasher-safe glass.

GrillPro Cast Iron Smoker Box

Because Dad needs one more excuse to fire up the grill, GrillPro’s smoker box will have him churning out juicy, flavorful steaks all summer. Tough, durable and constructed from cast iron, Dad will appreciate the simplicity of this fuss-free smoker.

Taylor Digital Luggage Scale

Help Dad avoid charges for overweight luggage with this handy little device. Taylor’s digital luggage scale is light-weight, easy to use and one of those travel essentials that he probably doesn’t yet have.

Tavern Puzzle

Traditionally forged by blacksmiths to amuse their friends at country taverns and inns, modern-day tavern puzzles are mechanical in nature and do not rely on force or trickery. And after Dad solves his puzzle (or gives up), they look quite dashing on the wall or his desk.

‘Clackin’ Minnow’ Fishing Lure

If catching a lunker is on Dad’s to-do list, then the Clackin’ Minnow might just be on his wish list. Featuring a single stainless steel ball that transmits a loud cadence rattle that fish hear and feel, this lure is designed for long casting. And did we mention that it’s a reel of a steal at about $13?

Magwear Magnetic Wristband

If he’s prone to tinkering with his computer (or any other small device), this magnetized wrist band will save Dad from searching frantically on the floor for that missing screw.

Because graduation is such an important milestone in one’s life, it’s only natural to want to celebrate your favorite grad’s achievements. While most anyone would love cold, hard cash, we’ve rounded up our favorite gifts that range from wallet-friendly to extravagant when you want to give something a little more personal or thoughtful.

Small Tokens of Affection: Gifts under $25

Small but useful items such as coffee cups, photo frames or key chains emblazoned with their graduation year or the words “Congrats Grad” are the classic choices, and are especially well-received when accompanied by money. But let’s face it, the recipient will probably have four “2011 Grad” mugs by the time they don their cap and gown. Inspirational and advice books tailored to their field of study or interests are sturdy buys, while cookbooks or resume books will help keep them well fed. Those who like to write in a journal or send handwritten notes are candidates for another classic: a nice pen engraved with a special message.

Students moving into the dorms will most likely need a water filter pitcher, hot pot (for cooking instant ramen or soup), coffee maker or collapsible laundry hamper. But a personal favorite would be board games—they’re a great choice for grads of any age and are just plain fun.

Because They Worked Hard: Gifts under $50

For both future and former college coeds, consider apparel or home décor featuring their school logo and colors. Favorites tend to be sweatshirts, T-shirts or throw blankets, though most universities offer a wide array of spirited goods from license plate frames to wall clocks. Gourmet or care package-themed gift baskets are just right for this price range, or you can get personal with money clips, keepsake boxes and leather wallets that are embossed or engraved with their name or a special message.

Anyone starting their new life will find a use for luggage—look for easily storable canvas sacks for overnight trips, sturdy backpacks for jaunts across Europe or carry-on rollers for trips back home. Those moving into a new apartment could probably use a toaster oven for basic cooking or a household tool set to hang picture frames and make basic repairs. Want to give something brainier? Consider a nice chess set for those who love strategy games or a slim laptop case or messenger bag for the workaholics.

Spoil Them: Gifts under $100

Help the college bound record their lectures with a portable recorder or a sleek iPhone and iPod accessory like the Mikey microphone. If they don’t have a camera already built into their computer, a webcam will let them video chat with family and friends, while a wireless router will cut down on pesky cords when sharing internet with a roommate. A nice pair of headphones, in-ear buds and even iPod speakers will help them block noise during study time, while an electronic charging station (or “valet”) will keep all of their gadgets charged and organized in style. And who doesn’t need a new digital camera or printer?

For the alumnus or alumna full of pride, consider a class ring customized with their birthstone or engraved with a pictograph representing their interests or favorite after-school activities. A nice leather messenger bag will let them proudly tote their resume to job interviews, plus it transitions nicely into a laptop bag or youthful version of the briefcase once they land that job. If their walls are looking a little bare, give them a décor boost with a framed world map. Gorgeous oversized maps are everywhere in home décor magazines and retail catalogs these days, but do they truly ever go out of style?

Money is No Object: Gifts over $100

Let’s face it, your grad is going to need to relax between college courses or after a hard day of work and a video game system they don’t have would be much appreciated. The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii are still the supreme systems on the market. Do they already have one (or all) of these systems? Then give them one of the popular extras they may not have, such as the Kinect for Xbox 360 or the PlayStation Move. And don’t think that video games are just for the boys. The Nintendo DSi has been very popular with young women, while its much pricier successor, the 3DS, touts the most buzz on the market right now (despite complaints about its three to four hour battery life). Speaking of buzz, the iPad also makes a nice gift. While it won’t be their go-to for writing a paper or a long e-mail, this little device is portable, user-intuitive and serves a delicious roundup of media from gorgeous games to smoothly-rendered movies.

But the $100-plus price tag doesn’t mean your gift has to be all about play. Give them a reason to call home with a sleek iPhone, keep them from getting lost in their new environment with a GPS receiver or let them document their new life with a digital camera. For high school graduates moving into a college dorm, a compact refrigerator will be a blessing when it comes to keeping water cold and storing a few essentials, while both those entering and leaving college will find a new laptop useful for writing papers or resumes at the local coffee shop. Another gift that screams productivity is software, be it a word processing, photo editing or financial management software—just make sure ahead of time that whatever you buy will work on their current (or new) computer.
